ABSTRACT

Instead of bringing greater freedom, individuality, and happiness to people, consumer culture can exert a powerful psychological toll, curtailing a positive sense of who we are, our welfare, and even our health. This chapter evaluates the “price” of consumer culture in three ways:

• The rigorous evidence throughout the book documents that the search for “body perfect” and material “good life” consumer culture ideals has a negative impact on vulnerable children, adolescents, and adults.
