ABSTRACT

The date of this excerpt depends on the date of the conference. We know that Reverend Thomas Sperin was successful in arranging a conference between Barrow and Thomas Cartwright. 1 The probable date would be after Sperin’s two conferences with Barrow on March 14 and 20, 1589/1590, 2 and before Cartwright’s imprisonment in October, 1590. Since Cartwright came to London about May 20, 1590, and was still there on June 23, and was in Warwick on August 5, we have a terminus a quo and a terminus ad quem (assuming that Cartwright had not made a special trip in March or April to London). 3 Therefore, Cartwright’s conference with Barrow was about June, 1590.
