ABSTRACT

From the results of this prospective study, we can say that the use of extensive screening for malignancy in patients with idiopathic VTE is worthwhile to identify hidden malignancies, since a substantial proportion of occult cancer has been discovered, and many of these cases were in a relatively early phase, allowing possible curative treatment. If we stratify patients by group, we can say that the risk of occult cancer was higher in elderly patients and in those without thrombophilic conditions. Given the relatively low number of patients included in the study, it is impossible to give firm evidence of an impact on cancer-related mortality, but only to present a positive trend toward it.
