ABSTRACT

In 1994, Lebeau et al61 reported that patients with small-cell lung cancer treated with UFH for 5 weeks had a higher 1-year survival rate (40%) than nontreated patients (30%). Several hypotheses on possible mechanisms that may reduce cancer mortality in patients treated with anticoagulants, and specifically LMWH, have been published. The only way to verify these hypotheses is to study the effect of anticoagulation in specific cancer types over longer treatment periods.
