ABSTRACT

The anesthesiologist possesses the knowledge and technical skills to provide the ophthalmologist with a safe and comfortably anesthetized patient, while monitoring the patient’s cardiorespiratory status during intraocular ophthalmic procedures. With an anesthesiologist, the ophthalmologist is allowed the opportunity to focus solely on their operative technique and ensure a successful operative outcome. The operative eye is akinetic, the intraocular pressure is controlled, and the oculocardiac reflex is either avoided or easily managed by the observant anesthesiologist.
