ABSTRACT

So far we have examined the GSOs with their existence, if not their status, taken as given. In this chapter we argue that their continued existence cannot be taken for granted, either singly or as a group. While we do not pretend to fully assess the future of sport, it will become clear that the GSOs face a set of challenges and potential threats to their existence. We arrive at this conclusion by examining trends in sport, making particular example of a set of five sports, at least one of which appears to be in terminal decline. Nevertheless, the primary focus is on new sports and sport activities. These are continually being created and developed, often under conditions that challenge the existence of GSOs. They also have the potential for establishing new GSOs.
