Pediatrics is the medical specialty that focuses on the medical and psychosocial aspects of growth and development in children and on those diseases, disorders, problems, and variations that impact normal growth and development. Growth typically concerns size, while development concerns function. More specifically, development often refers to higher cortical functions such as intelligence, language and learning, and the expression of emotions. Child development is studied by a variety of diverse professionals, each of whom brings a different perspective to the topic. The research literature in any one of these fields is challenging to a single professional.
