Mobile banking, a business models approach
Mobile banking is a subject of much research and discussion, in both academia and the banking industry. While the focus of most academic research has been on customers and potential users, it is worth also reviewing mobile banking from the business perspective of banks. Such a review would indicate that mobile banking services (and mobile payments) potentially form part of a trend to deconstruct banking services, a process which challenges the fundamental justifi cations for building large banks and integrating fi nancial services. This chapter considers the threats to traditional banking presented through mobile banking services, especially in the context of the potential impact that payment-only models could have to the personal current (checking) account, which is a vital ‘anchor’ product for large scale banking groups.
