LACAN, JACQUES (1901-81) French psychoanalyst whose in uence extends beyond the con nes of clinical practice to the study of literature, politics and ideology. Lacan wrote no books in the standard sense; the majority of works published under his name are transcriptions of seminars that he delivered between 1948 and 1980. His most in uential work, in terms of an English-speaking audience, is contained in Écrits: A Selection (1977), especially the opening essay ‘The Mirror Stage as Formative of the Function of the I as Revealed in Psychoanalytic Experience’.
