ABSTRACT

This chapter provides empirical grounds, and instigates theoretical discussion on women's soccer migration within the context of sports labor migration. It examines Scandinavian emigration, and focuses on athletes from Norway, Denmark and Sweden who have moved away in order to play soccer in countries outside of Scandinavia. The chapter explains the reasons why Scandinavian players emigrate despite living in the core of international women's soccer. It then examines how this migratory flow emerged and which patterns and trends define its historical development. The chapter provides a review of the main themes of the current literature on international mobility of soccer players and proposes the theoretical framework for the development of this study. It describes the methods, followed by the presentation and analyses of the findings. The chapter concludes with a summary of the main findings regarding the historical development and main determinants of the Scandinavian emigration of women soccer players.
