ABSTRACT

This FP7-funded project ‘Disaggregating Chinese Perceptions of the EU and the Implications for the EU’s China Policy’ has administered the first (to date) random sampling public survey of Chinese citizens in six major cities, including Beijing, on their views on foreign countries, international relations and foreign affairs. It also included an opinion survey of members of Chinese elites through a structured questionnaire and open-ended, face-to-face interviews. The surveys generated rich and representative empirical data for the comprehensive and systematic research of Chinese views on and attitudes towards the EU and Europe. In this book, the Chinese and European contributors from the consortium have applied various relevant theories to analyse the data. Although they are initial attempts at explaining the data, the chapters are of theoretical and practical value to research and policy circles in China, the EU and beyond, owing to the depth and breadth of the topics and their practical relevance.
