ABSTRACT

I was born in Ormskirk, Lancashire, in the North of England, in 1944, and went to the local state grammar school. My best subjects at school were math and chemistry, and I was fortunate enough to win a State Scholarship for my school examination performance at age 18 in math, physics, and chemistry. At that time, these Scholarships were given to the top 2,400 children in each age cohort (out of a total of over 670,000), of whom about 800 went to Cambridge University, 700 went to Oxford University, 400 went to London University, and 500 went elsewhere. Luckily, I got into Cambridge University after taking its entrance examinations. I started off doing math, physics, and chemistry, but eventually graduated in psychology, a subject which had fascinated me from an early age.
