ABSTRACT
The field of adolescent psychiatry as we know it today, with its foundation in adolescent psychology, was advanced by a handful of pioneers whose work was truly path-breaking in identifying and defining adolescence as a distinct period of development. Teenagers were no longer either big children or small adults; rather, they had finally been recognized as having a distinct developmental profile.
