ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I explore how neoliberalization works out on the ground in the context of the farm workplace. How, precisely, do neoliberal trends influence farm labor relations and the experiences of hired workers on farms? I pursue this question in the context of dairy farming in Wisconsin, where labor relations have become remarkably segregated by race and nativity in recent years. This chapter is part of a larger project in which I use original data from a survey of Wisconsin dairy farmers and workers, exploratory farmer focus groups, and in-depth interviews with employers and workers in order to describe and explain the emergence of agricultural workplace inequalities in the contemporary context of US agriculture (see Harrison and Lloyd, 2012, 2013).
