ABSTRACT

In her 1987 landmark paper, “Popular Arts in Africa,” Karin Barber argues that popular arts proclaim their own importance without encouragement or recognition from official cultural bodies. She also predicts the development of African popular arts as a significant cultural and artistic phenomenon (Barber 1987, 2). Now, more than twenty-five years after the publication of her paper, it is interesting to examine what the popular arts scene in Africa looks like.
