ABSTRACT

An overview of competition for international students and the economic gains they bring to host nations is provided as a backdrop for a discussion on the impact of international students on assessment. Aspects of the international student experience are foregrounded including emotional and ethical issues. Diverse inuences on assessment – global, national and local – are explored through the concept of ‘glonacal’ higher education. e centrality of assessment to the student is highlighted and approaches to a balanced blend of summative, formative and diagnostic assessment are presented. e advantages of designing assessment regimes that enhance learning are outlined, emphasising feedback to students on their learning.
