Shrinking Cities in the Fourth Urban Revolution? IVONNE AUDIRAC
This chapter begins by briefl y framing the diff erence between urban decline and shrinking cities, within Soja’s (2003) thesis of a Fourth Urban Revolution. It then discusses views on suburbanization and its relationship to shrinking cities and examines urban shrinkage in the US in light of the current foreclosure crisis. By overviewing popular interventions proff ered as solutions to shrinking cities and assessing them through the lens of modern utopias of urban form and social processes, the chapter concludes with some thoughts about implications for the future of shrinking cities.
