Game-based Learning as a Vehicle to Teach and Assess First Aid Competencies
Did you know that most cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital setting where, in most cases, the general public will be responsible for providing initial basic life support (BLS)? In case of an accident, injury or sudden illness, a bystander rather than a medically trained person is oft en fi rst to be present at the scene (Van de Velde et al. , 2009). First aid (FA) training is essential in preparing the general public for an initial response to such situations. Incorporating FA training in the school curriculum would maximize the number of potential fi rst aiders in the community.
