ABSTRACT

Tony Boydell and I at Surprised Stare Games (https://www.surprisedstaregames.co.uk/) have between us been designing and publishing card and board games for over 50 years. I was fortunate to have some board games published in the 1980s, including a short-lived commercial disaster called Starship Tycoons (Paull, 1986); we learn from failure, as much if not more than from success, and I learned an immense amount. I hope that our experiences will help others to enjoy making games, while avoiding some of the traps that earlier travellers have fallen into.
