Asia contains 60 per cent of the world’s population and covers a vast area, extending from Iran in the west to Japan in the east, and stretching from Kazakhstan in the north to Indonesia in the south. With some of the richest countries (e.g. Japan, Singapore) and some of the poorest countries on earth (e.g. Bangladesh, Cambodia), levels of economic development vary widely within the continent; overall, some 45 per cent of Asians live below the poverty line.
