The educational principles behind these frameworks make the reading of stories in ways that will help connect teachers and pupils to a broader and more spacious pedagogy a serious possibility. In addition, there are now several new initiatives that are encouraging a more coherent, systematic approach to learning which will help children to see the links with subjects and their own development as human beings through the curriculum of social and emotional aspects of learning (SEAL; see DfES, 2005b). The needs of children have been given a strengthened focus with the initiatives of Every Child Matters (DfES, 2005a) and the Primary Review (2006-2008) which is currently investigating the condition and future of primary education in England.
