ABSTRACT
Vast areas in southern Iraq are covered with marshes, where tall reeds (berdi) up to 3.0m high grow through about 1.0 m depth of water. The villagers build their houses from bundles of these reeds, and the villages are connected with waterways about 2.0m deep cleared of the reeds that are used by narrow boats or “canoes”.
