chapter  4
Gender, ethnicity and ‘the community’
Pages 20

This chapter looks at the relationship between the so-called ‘community’ and the social divisions of race, ethnicity and gender on the one hand and space and place on the other. It examines the notion of ‘the community’, which assumes collectivities as homogeneous and overlooks the conflicting interests among their members (Yuval-Davis 1994). The chapter takes up the concepts of space and place as social constructs and discusses their links to the notion of ‘the community’.
