The chapter first looks at ways in which diasporas have been theorised and the extent to which these analyses do or do not acknowledge gendered differences. Second, drawing on the interviews conducted for the tracer study and other published material by South African women, whose lives have been disrupted and disjointed by migration and exile, I consider the meanings these women give to exile and home in an attempt to reflect on the theoretical literature.
