ABSTRACT

The Hotel Resilient Initiative is engaging hotels in the process of resilience building and provides them with the necessary tools and guidelines to proactively build their disaster resilience. At the core of the initiative are the following four components engaging hotels, setting standards, providing support, and building a business case. This chapter discusses each of the components to provide an in-depth understanding of the Hotel Resilient Initiative and what it offers to the tourism sector. The knowledge of the hotel staff is also increased through the Hotel Resilient trainings that provide hotel staff not only additional guidance about the implementation of the Hotel Resilient Standards, but also about the general aspects of disaster and climate resilience, thereby supporting the engagement of the industry in this field. Hotels can function as a key agent in response and recovery, providing immediate support to the surrounding communities as well as supporting the recovery of economic activity in the affected area.
