ABSTRACT

Resilience is a research field that has been discussed more and more in a tourism context in recent years. In this regard, resilient thinking is seen as a prerequisite for future-oriented tourism development. The various challenges faced by tourism make it difficult to understand the resilience approach in a consistent way. This leads to the risk that a wide range of initiatives will be put under the cloak of a fuzzy resilience paradigm and that the potential of the application in a destination context is wasted before it starts forming tangible practical projects. In addition to assessing the relevance of resilience thinking in tourism, this paper delivers first insights in the expectations of destination managers on the resilience approach. From these considerations, basic recommendations for action are delivered on how resilience in tourist destinations could be better applied and institutionalised in the future. Resilience thinking is regarded as an essential prerequisite for the fact that the overall objective of a Destination Resilience can be underpinned by practice-relevant strategies.
