ABSTRACT

This chapter has followed the ‘journey’ Aotearoa/New Zealand has taken concerning physical literacy, from the perspective of the crown agency responsible for oversight and leadership of the sport and recreation sector – Sport New Zealand (Sport NZ). Consideration is given to the successes and challenges, and importantly the learning involved, that has influenced this process and will continue to shape what the role of physical literacy may be within the New Zealand context. Sport NZ aims to operate with a strong partnership focus, so attention is also directed towards understanding what impact this organisational importance on physical literacy has had on other sectors, particularly education and health. Contemplation concerning the future potential a continued focus on physical literacy can achieve is discussed in terms of our country’s increasingly greater emphasis on a united governmental focus on intergenerational well-being for all New Zealanders.
