ABSTRACT

This chapter continues the debate opened in Chapter 18 concerning the congruence between physical literacy and human flourishing. The purpose of these two chapters is to consider how far physical literacy can be seen as a significant contributor to human flourishing. Both chapters build from Chapter 4, which looked at the value of physical literacy, particularly in the context of it being a discrete human capability. The notion of human embodiment, and by implication physical literacy, being integral to human nature is revisited in the context of human flourishing having a close relationship with human nature. This chapter specifically explores the relationship between human embodiment/physical literacy and human nature with reference to human needs, human resources and the primacy of movement. It is argued that in relation to these three areas, human embodiment is an integral feature of human nature and human life. This gives further legitimacy to the claim that physical literacy can make a valuable contribution to realising human nature, and thus human flourishing.
