Grounded theory and data analysis

BySally Everett, Areej Shabib Aloudat, Ramesh Durbarry

This chapter particularly focuses on grounded theory (GT) and provides detailed case studies into how this approach is used to generate qualitative data. GT is an inductive methodology and is particularly used to offer explanation on the topic tourism students are researching or in the construction of a theory through data analysis, as if to say that the theory is grounded in the data. The chapter explains the different approaches of GT. It helps to understand how to analyse data using GT and explains when to use GT. The function of GT methodology is to generate or develop a theory. The theory is grounded in data systematically gathered and analysed through the research process. During actual research there is a successive interplay between the collection and analysis of data that moves towards constructing the theory.
