INTRODUCTION Prior to the Supreme Court's decision in Bates v. Arizona (1977),

advertising by lawyers was restricted, and in many cases prohibited, by the disciplinary rules of the American Bar Association and the respective state regulatory bodies. In the Bates decision, First Amendment protection was, for the first time, extended to attorney advertising.
