ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the treatment of an 8-year-old boy who looked like a very pretty girl. Jürgen was not interested in sports. All his friends were girls. His parents were concerned that his differences from other children would lead to his being increasingly teased and bullied. They wanted to help him learn to handle this anticipated abuse. It would have been impossible to predict the remarkable changes that steadily evolved over the course of this fascinating treatment. Besides being interesting in its own right, and for what it may contribute to our appreciation of the complexities of gender development, this case also lends itself to pondering principles of therapeutic action in some new ways.
