ABSTRACT
Modems exist to permit digital signals to be passed over circuits intended for analog voice signals, which means the data rate is inherently low. Because analog paths always involve an extra set of interfaces and often use older communications technologies that are prone to noise, modem links tend to have higher error rates. But because they are inexpensive and readily available, voice grade circuits with modems are widely used where their performance is sufficient to the application.
