ABSTRACT
It is common to find the phrase ‘promotion of a higher standard of living’ figuring in Egypt’s development policy objectives. It is common also to hear in everyday conversation enquiries on personal self-evaluation such as how one is ‘doing’, ‘being’ and ‘how is life?’ (izay al-hal, kaifa halokom?). And yet these phrases mean different things to different people.
