ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the Posthumanist/Transhumanist discussion: Is the borderline between humans and non-humans becoming blurred? If so, what does that imply for future humanist thinking? Posthumanism and Transhumanism are thus, as new philosophical and inter-disciplinary terms, an integral part of contemporary audio-visual culture. Politics is a crucial point of contemporary graphic novels and includes serious moral concerns about the social landscape, the natural environment, sustainability and the essence of being human at a time when the term has to be re-defined. Even the work process of the designer, who works directly on the computer, as only few designers of his status do, seems to bear Posthuman qualities. To create a better understanding of ideas and values reflected in the stories bearing Post- and Transhumanist qualities, sustainability and culture and Humanism, while technology, violence, power and religion stand on the other side as the Transhumanist Other.
