Alterity: being human

WithHÉLÈNE CIXOUS

Otherness (Altérité) H.C.: Otherness, yes. But are we not always prey to otherness? The fever only lets up in appearance. At the exterior floor, ‘up above’, at the floor of the semblance – of myself – of order. Below, next door, we are always adrift. We respond straight ahead and think sideways. Always in the process of betraying (ourself), of leaving (ourself). We ‘take decisions’: in a stroke, we come down on one side – we cut out a part of ourself. We are tortuous, impenetrable. We do the thing we just decided not to do. We are the place of a structural unfaithfulness. To write we must be faithful to this unfaithfulness. To write in voltes. In volts.
