ABSTRACT
This chapter provides practical guidance to help teachers to prepare for their first post and to think strategically about their career. It provides general information about looking for posts, writing their application and curriculum vitae and attending interviews. The chapter focuses on how teachers can apply this to specific design and technology posts and prepare for those vital first interviews. It then introduces strategies that will enable teachers to identify their goals and influence their own career and professional development. Teachers need to be aware that posts may be advertised under a variety of headings, including 'design and technology', 'technology', 'engineering' or 'food technology'. Some areas may also continue to advertise for home economics staff. The application form may be posted out to teachers from school or, as is increasingly the case, available online. It is a good idea to photocopy or print out a copy of form, which will allow them to plan out a draft of their application.
