ABSTRACT

Textiles technology is usually taught as part of the design and technology curriculum, although in some schools textiles is taught within art and design and in others it will appear in both areas of the curriculum. Textiles technology teachers come from a variety of backgrounds and have a range of textile-related degrees and/or work experience, including textiles technology, fashion, interiors, textile arts and surface decoration. Within textiles technology, the areas of creative design work, construction and industrial manufacturing combine to produce a well-rounded curriculum which enables pupils to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of textiles. Industrial textiles range from bandages to engineering cables, road surfaces and bullet-proof clothing for the services. Pupils should be encouraged to look for opportunities for designing with textiles in many different situations. They are: researching; producing a brief; applying theoretical knowledge to the problem; writing a design specification; generating ideas; modelling; and testing.
