ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the health and safety of pupils in the classroom and teachers legal responsibilities. It discusses the legal requirements, risk analysis and management, and suggests ways in which design and technology can be taught safely. The main piece of legislation covering all areas of design and technology teaching is the Health and Safety at Work Act. The main requirements resulting from this Act are for employers to: secure the health, safety and welfare of employees; control the storage and use of dangerous substances; and so on. The department policy statement should incorporate aspects of the whole-school policy and include further points relevant to the subject. The Food Safety Act 1990 makes it illegal, amongst other things, to sell food either that does not comply with food safety requirements or that is not of the nature, substance or quality demanded by purchasers, or which is misleadingly labelled or advertised.
