ABSTRACT
Urdu is the official language of Pakistan, where it is spoken by about 10 million people (far exceeded in that country, incidentally, by the number speaking the related but non-official Panjabi). In India, it is spoken by at least 45 million, either as mother tongue or as second language, in the Panjab and in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
