ABSTRACT

Yoruba belongs to the Benue-Kwa group of Niger-Congo languages, and is spoken by at least 23 million people in southern Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Sierra Leone. Standard Yoruba is a blend of two closely similar dialects, Ọyọ and Lagos. There are many other dialectal forms. It is an analytic (i.e. non-inflecting) language with phonemic tone.
