ABSTRACT

In labelling cases, a specific label is affixed to a stimulus and exerts its distorting influence in subsequent judgement or recall (cf. the anchoring effect in Chapter 10, the misinformation effect in Chapter 19, and the hindsight bias in Chapter 20). Text box 18.1 lists a number of examples demonstrating labelling effects in different domains. This list already suggests that labelling effects may be rather widespread in our lives. More examples, from more applied domains, are given at the end of this chapter in Text box 18.3.
