Mapping the Terrain of Homosexually-Themed Language
A growing body of research documents that homophobia is decreasing in sport settings (Anderson, 2011; Anderson & McGuire, 2010; Harris & Clayton, 2007). This corresponds with a trend of decreasing homophobia in British and American cultures (Anderson, 2009; Savin-Williams, 2005; Weeks, 2007). However, theway that homosexually-themed languagehas changed in relation to these improving attitudes remains undertheorized. Discussions of language use normally remains fixated on whether a particular word or phrase is homophobic or not (Sanders, 2008). This simplification obscures the complex nature of homosexually-themed language and fails to engage with the range of verbal practices that have some form of homosexual content.
