THE DOCUMENTATION OF GIFT EXCHANGE SYSTEMS has an uninterrupted history in Melanesian ethnography. This is because exchange activities in Melanesia have not merely continued, but have effl oresced during a period that has been increasingly dominated by a commodity-based economy (Gregory 1982:166). This effl orescence of gift exchange systems took different forms at different times and places with various consequences for society and culture.
