Extension stories

WithFlora Samuel

This account focuses on the stories of three home extension projects in Cardiff, all of which were built without the input of an architect. Through these stories I will illustrate how the owners were, through the process of self build, able to produce extensions that are an affi rmation of identity and a real source of pride. At the same time I will reveal serious concerns about the image of the architect in the minds of many people. The extensions indicate the irrelevance of the culture of architecture to the design of most homes in Britain and the irrelevance of architecture to much social science research on the home.
