Dilemmas of Diversity: A New Paradigm of Integrating Diversity
The American slogan e pluribus unum states that America’s diversity of citizens is unified. On its own, and when taken to an extreme, diversity can be chaotic. The Weimar Republic was highly diverse. For years Lebanon was regarded as the “Switzerland” of the Middle East. Then came ethnic and religious massacres. The Tutsis and the Hutus were “diverse” and two million of the former were slaughtered. What generates wealth is diversity which has been included or unified. Hence the only type of diversity that is valuable is the kind of diversity that has been integrated into an organization.
