ABSTRACT

In the summer of 2003 four European archivists1 attended the meeting of the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) Working Group, held as part of the Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. Coming at the same time as the publication of the revised version, EAD 2002, this represented the greatest international representation on the group to date and set the seal on the internationalization of the standard itself. Given this, the European representatives thought that it would be a good idea to have a European conference on EAD. The Direction des Archives de France was receptive to the idea and provided funding for the event, which was organized almost single-handedly by Claire Sibille. The conference took place on October 7-8, 2004, in Paris, France, at the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires.
