With the advent of new networked technologies, librarians have been faced with the challenge of providing services in a virtual or online environment. From complex end-user search systems to e-mail and chat reference, many of the library’s core functions now take place, at least in part, online. Instruction is no exception. Over the past decade, libraries have experimented with virtual instruction. Online tutorials have been a mainstay of these efforts. While the technology has changed from static HTML pages to Flash and streaming video, the core function of the tutorial, to teach patrons how to conduct research effectively, has not.
