ABSTRACT

Cities are at the forefront of global socio-economic change, creating both opportunities and challenges for inclusive development. Learning to live together sustainably in cities, while at the same time ensuring equitable access to urban advantage, is one of the most important educational challenges of our time (UNESCO, n.d). This requires a focus on creating a quality learning and educational environment that promotes sustainability and equity. This chapter documents the experiences of an international design and planning studio, called Global Studio, which was aimed at experimenting an innovative way of educating young, upcoming urban planning and design professionals. The focus of the chapter is this studio, which had an aim of addressing inclusivity through improving educational practice in the context of urbanization. It critically evaluates the processes and outcomes of this educational platform and also draws on the diverse experiences of the authors to emphasize rethinking educational practices for inclusive urbanization. The case selected is the sixth Global Studio (GS) held in Bhopal (2012).
