ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the questions, what are the features of feminist activism within the most recent movements in the United States since 2011? And, how do feminists spread feminism within “other” spaces? It compares and contrasts the variety of means that feminists use to influence other movements and offer suggestions for future research about how feminism persists in not-explicitly-feminist spaces. The hashtags of #FemGA #SayHerName #NotHereForBoys are examples of feminist activism within three “other” not-explicitly-feminist spaces. Feminist tactics and framings contributed to the anti-nuclear and peace movements and environmental movements, on first glance, the Occupy Wall Street Movement (e.g., Occupy), Black Lives Matter (BLM), and protests in support of Bernie Sander's Presidential Campaign may appear to have little to do with feminism. However, the chapter, traces how feminists participated in these movements to illustrate the continued salience of feminist activism in contemporary movements. Contemporary feminism is diverse, uses online organizing, and persists in many different institutional contexts.
