ABSTRACT

Ultrasound is the imaging modality that is often initially used, since it is cost-effective as well as noninvasive. Ultrasound (US) preoperative imaging offers important information regarding the size, quantity, and location of fibroids in relation to the uterus. Fibroids usually appear as well-defined, solid, concentric, hypoechoic masses that cause a variable amount of acoustic shadowing. US is advantageous in terms of distinguishing fibroids from other pathologies that may look similar in appearance. Accurate reporting and measurement of fibroid size are important, as this information has been shown to be useful in predicting the need for a major uterine procedure. Furthermore, if treatment is required, proper preoperative reporting and planning are necessary for optimal treatment success.
